South Africa

In April my boyfriend and I made a little travel dream come true and flew to South Africa. Our plan was to travel the country by hire car driving from Cape Town to Johanneburg ("Jo'burg"). We decided for South Africa as we heard/saw on pictures that it had a beautiful, varied countryside with a veery long coast (I/we love to be by the sea) and an enormous and multifaceted cultural heritage as well as an interesting and complex history. Our expectations were not only met, but exceeded. We experienced welcoming people, nice hostels and restaurants at good value for money and got many wonderful unforgettable impressions and memories. Here YOU can get an impression:
Ah yes, I almost forget to tell you about the little tohubohu at the end of our trip. When leaving the next to last stop of our journey, the beautiful coffee bay a place almost completely isolated from modern telecommunication we got to know that a vulcano erruption in Europe might prevent us from flying back to Germany. First we didn't understand what was going on as we couldn't imagine a vulcano erruption in Germany or the bordering countries, but with every new piece of information we could gather (thanks to our wonderful couch surfing hosts at Pietermaritzburg) it became more likely that we really wouldn't be able to fly back as planned. When we got to know that we could either come to Joburg airport every day to be put on a waiting list to take cancelled places on the fully booked planes the days after our flight was cancelled or rebook for the next date where thereare secure places (which was 10 days later) we decided for the last option and spontaneously booked a flight to Namibia where my good friend Anne was working at an development aid project. So we celebrated my birthday with her in Namibia and got some more great impressions and experiences from another beautiful African country.

Culture and time in Tampere

In January I went on a field trip to Tampere, Finland together with the 24 other students from my Master Programme in "Intercultural communication". We were to conduct research about "concepts of time" in Finland. My research group studied cultural particularities in spending and managing work and spare time. We conducted interviews with Finnish university students and used psychological questionnaires to messure attitudes towards time management (polychronicity/monochronicity) and to assess other cultural dimensions. It was very interesting to try out some of the methods we had learned about in theory before.
We had a lot of fun while doing research ans also in our spare time. We went for a long walk on one of the big lakes near Tampere and even went to the oldest sauna of Finland on our last evening. And the -15°C at day and night time you almost get used to. ;-)

2009...

Long time no write, I know. 2009 was again very eventful, many things happened since my last blog entry. A lot of travelling included. Just a short summary:

In March, I visited my friend Doga in Turkey and discovered Istanbul.

After that trip I started an internship in a Cross-cultural consulting company, which was very interesting. During that time, two good friends visited me in Passau: Anna in April and Oscar in May.
In April, I had the pleasure of attending a German-Sicilian wedding on Sicily together with my boyfriend. In July, after my internship and before finishing my last exams and writing my Bachelor thesis, it was time for a very nice short trip to Croatia.
Since August, I'm travelling regularly to the Netherlands as my boyfriend got a job over there. And with every new bite of Dutch culture I get to know I like this country more!

In Octobre, I finished my studies in Passau and moved to Chemnitz, half an hour from my home town Lengenfeld, to start my Master's in Intercultural Communication and Psychology.
In Decembre, I celebrated Christmas at home and with my boyfriend's family in Cologne. A trip to Paris to celebrate New Year's eve together with good friends, made 2009 perfect. Not to mention all the time I spent with my friends partying, studying and making plans for our future and visiting my family back home!
Besides many worries concerning future directions and a lot of stress at university I had a very happy and fulfilling year 2009. I hope the New Year will bring even more hapiness and I wish you all the best, too!

web 2.0 and beyond...

Just a quick note: Attended a refreshing presentation with the title "La blogosphère politique en France - et en Allemagne" yesterday. It was more than interesting to hear about the different blogging behaviour in France and Germany. We learned that French politicians have been actively using blogs a lot longer than their German counterparts. According to Mr Wittmann, the lecturer, this is amongst others due to the fact that for a French politician the support of his regional basis is a lot more important, so they keep their people updated about what's going on in faraway Paris. Gives me the feeling that there is a lot more to explore and discover in our good old German "Internetlandschaft".
But Mr Wittmann went even further: From the blogging phenomenom itself he moved on to social networks and the whole range of web 2.0-possibilities reaching from commenting and recommending tools to micro-blogging (ever heard about "Twitter"?!) and even subsequent "real-life" meetings such as "barcamps". He showed us some pages analysing the "blogging landscape", pages providing analysing tools theirselves, pages where you can look for blogs and pages rating blogs ...
Of course we also discussed the wiki hype with its advantages and disadvantages and last but not at all least the dangers and manipulative traits of this development. Because after all, the one who knows a lot about programming or simply some tricks has a lot of manipulative power on the web as we saw with "google-bombs" or "google bowling". (By the way, did you ever think about using an alternative search engine?)
Questions that remain concerning this whole development are in my opinion: How come so many people spend so much time on the web communicating with and helping people they hardly know (if not don't know at all)? - I'm thinking of things like "leo.org", "netdoktor.de", "chefkoch.de" or facebook/studivz-groups. And even further: how come so many people like the idea of turning their inside out on the web, publishing stuff that they would only tell their best friend under a duvet in "status boxes" (facebook/studivz) or everyday-activities through that "twigger" thingy?
Of course I know that I'm part of that whole thing, my blog is long beyond its initial intention of "informing my friends at home about my experiences abroad". I'm still using it to keep people updated who are interested in how I'm doing, but still I have to admit that the self-disclosure aspect gained in significance. Question back to me: Why am I blogging - and most importantly how come I write four long paragraphs after the introducing sentence "just a quick note" ??!!??
...The bottom line is that the answer might be found in highly complex psychological patterns resulting from the complexity of the time we're living in itself ... but maybe it's also just our childlike curiosity of exploring new stuff and seeing what happens ... I do have fun doing so and that is the main thing as society teaches us - isn't it?!

New Year's in Austria

This year (or should I say last year?) I spent New Year's eve together with my family in an Austrian ski resort. We had some great sunny skiing days and a delicious New Year's dinner at our hotel....the calm before the storm of final exams awaiting me at the beginning of this New Year back at uni!
PS: Happy New Year to you!

Ready steady go!

Last weekend we took the opportunity to test this winter's first snow. Together with some good friends I went to the Obertauern ski resort in Austria for two days of snowboarding. Although it was quite foggy and stormy on Saturday we spent all day on the slope. A great feeling and loads of fun! Fortunately, we had sunny weather on Sunday so we could actually see what the ski resort looked like and explore it a bit more. After coming back to Passau by coach in the evening, I immediately fell into bed - exhausted but happy.

Es weihnachtet mal wieder...

Jajaja, it's christmas time again and while the year draws to a close I'm getting more and more sentimental (am I getting old now?!). Fabulous memories of christmas time one year ago with Swedish christmas markets, glögg and pepparkakor, julpost, ice skating in Kungsträgarden and Gröna Lund... and especially today as TV and radio speak non-stop about the Nobel Peace prize being awarded in Oslo with the Stockholm Nobel prize cerenomy following tomorrow - no wonder I'm getting sentimental! (extenuating circumstances - yippie, I'm not getting old yet :-)
Other than that I'm also enjoying christmas time here in Passau with nice little "Nikolausfeiern" (St Nicholas parties) among friends and -självklart- visits to the christmas market. I'm even planning to bake some "tyska kakor" and write christmas cards ... somehow these christmas rituals give me a feeling of "being home" (wherever I am) ...

Old acquaintances..

Yesterday evening I watched the last episode of the thriller series "Forbrydelsen" (Kommissarin Lund). At one point I thought "I know that one person on the screen from somewhere" (as it happens quite often those last weeks...too many old faces I haven't seen in more than one year...). And yes, it was Kim Bodnia, the Danish actor I guided at the Stockholm film festival last year. It's a small world! (Foto: zdf)

The infinite is in the finite of every instant...

Yesterday I was at a nice funk-jazz concert of a band called Ronin. Very inspiring. If you like that kind of music and are open to experience something new look up their myspace page and visit their concerts if you have a chance to do so!By the way and kind of suiting: Did someone recently watch "The Drummer" (Die Reise des chinesischen Trommlers) by coincidence? Quite liked it as one could take something from it even if the story itself was a bit too stereotypical...

Back in Passau

After 1 year and 2 months, I'm back at my university town, ready to start the last semester of my Bachelor studies!
